You can get it by anonymous ftp from ftp://ftp.tug.org/tex/modes.mf ftp://ftp.cs.umb.edu/pub/tex/modes.mf and shortly from any CTAN site in /tex-archive/fonts/modes/modes-3.3.mf. finger ctan@tug.org for a list of all the CTAN sites and mirrors. News: New mode for the LaserJet 5, various alias name and dpi corrections. As always, thanks to the many contributors, and further additions and improvements are welcome. Please send bug reports or suggestions to tex-fonts@math.utah.edu (email tex-fonts-request to join). General information: modes.mf is a collection of Metafont mode_def's. It also makes common definitions for write/white printers, `special' information, and landscape mode. It uses up too much memory for the table sizes in the original mf.web, so you either have to increase the sizes (as in Web2c) or rename the file and remove unneeded modes. I don't understand mf.web well enough to understand how to make the modes use less memory; if some Metafont hacker can tell me, I'd very much like to hear it. If you have mode_def's which are not listed below, or corrections to the existing ones, please send them to me. Improvements to the exposition, particularly in how to create a new mode_def, are also welcome. kb@cs.umb.edu mode_def agfafzz = % AGFA 400PS (406dpi) mode_def agfatfzz = % AGFA P3400PS (400dpi) version 1.16 of gsftopk is available. gsftopk is a utility that calls Ghostscript to render PostScript fonts, and then converts them into pk format. This allows you to view PostScript fonts in xdvi. This version adds improved support for TrueType fonts. The upgraded version is available from CTAN in the file: tex-archive/fonts/utilities/gsftopk/gsftopk-1.16.tar.gz Recall that CTAN is one of the following hosts: ctan.tug.org ftp.dante.de ftp.tex.ac.uk or one of their numerous mirror sites. --Paul Vojta, vojta@math.berkeley.edu 19-Mar-1998 20:02:28-GMT,9413;000000000000 Return-Path: Received: from smtp2.xs4all.nl (smtp2.xs4all.nl [194.109.6.52]) by csc-sun.math.utah.edu (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id NAA05709 for ; Thu, 19 Mar 1998 13:02:27 -0700 (MST) Received: from infovore (root@infovore.xs4all.nl [194.109.13.254]) by smtp2.xs4all.nl (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id VAA06058; Thu, 19 Mar 1998 21:02:02 +0100 (CET) Received: by infovore id m0yFlPC-000clHC (Debian Smail-3.2 1996-Jul-4 #2); Thu, 19 Mar 1998 20:55:10 +0100 (CET) To: tex-k@tug.org, tex-archive@csc-sun.math.utah.edu, ctan-ann@relay.urz.uni-heidelberg.de, linux-announce@sws1.ctd.ornl.gov Subject: Web2C 7.2 Mime-Version: 1.0 (generated by tm-edit 7.105) Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII From: Olaf Weber Date: 19 Mar 1998 20:55:10 +0100 In-Reply-To: Olaf Weber's message of "19 Mar 1998 20:53:19 +0100" Message-ID: <87d8fiqwv5.fsf@infovore.xs4all.nl> Lines: 199 X-Mailer: Gnus v5.4.66/Emacs 19.34 Web2C 7.2 is available. This release contains a port of the basic TeX project programs (TeX, Metafont, MetaPost, GFtoPK, etc.) to Unix. It also contains a new version of the kpathsea library. The release can be obtained by retrieving ftp://ftp.tug.org/pub/tex/web2c.tar.gz ftp://ftp.tug.org/pub/tex/web.tar.gz You will also need a a library tree to compile and use these programs. The file ftp://ftp.tug.org/pub/tex/texmflib.tar.gz provides a bare-bones tree. Those of you who want to use e-TeX, pdfTeX, or Omega can obtain the necessary sources in ftp://ftp.tug.org/pub/tex/web2c-etex.tar.gz ftp://ftp.tug.org/pub/tex/etexlib.tar.gz ftp://ftp.tug.org/pub/tex/web2c-pdftex.tar.gz ftp://ftp.tug.org/pub/tex/pdftexlib.tar.gz ftp://ftp.tug.org/pub/tex/web2c-omega.tar.gz ftp://ftp.tug.org/pub/tex/omegalib.tar.gz ftp://ftp.tug.org/pub/tex/omegadoc.tar.gz respectively. Be warned though, the the software in the packages may be less portable than the core web2c sources, and that the web2c maintainers will supply only a limited amount of support. pdfTeX in particular is beta software. If you install the sources, the programs will automatically be built. The configure scripts have options that allow you disable this. The dvi drivers will be made available as separate packages. However, an all-in-one file containing all the sources mentioned above as well as sources for dvi drivers and supporting programs is already available as ftp://ftp.tug.org/pub/tex/texk.tar.gz There is no corresponding combined file for the texmf library; you need to get all the *lib.tar.gz files mentioned above to compile all the sources. Soon these files will be available on CTAN sites and their mirrors. An up-to-date list is also appended to this message. This release fixes virtually all known bugs in web2c-7.1 and kpathsea-3.1, and adds a few new features. Many thanks to all the people who reported bugs, made suggestions, and provided patches. Instructions for sending bug reports (and joining the mailing list) are in the distribution file kpathsea/BUGS. A summary of the most important changes follows; read them carefully. Please read the manuals as well. For kpathsea: 3.2 (14 March 1998) * Brace expansion will accept the path separator as well as the comma, e.g., {foo:bar}. * For TeX, we only recognize one suffix, because there is no such thing as a canonical list of TeX suffixes. * We distinguish between two kinds of suffixes in the code: the standard suffixes which may be appended to filenames when searching; and the alternative suffixes which are never appended, but when found this prevents a search with one of the standard suffixes. * kpse_reset_program_name: change assumed program name, resets the search paths, so that searches will work as expected for the new name. * kpse_set_program_name: new function, replaces kpse_set_progname. * The MakeTeX* scripts have been renamed to mktex* forms. For Web2C: 7.2 (14 March 1998) * TeX, METAFONT, MetaPost: New option --interaction, which can be used to set batchmode, nonstopmode, scrollmode, or errorstopmode. Thus we can replace a construct like tex '\batchmode \input foo' with tex --interaction=batchmode foo and have a %&format line select the correct format. * When %&format selects a format, the search paths are changed to conform to that format. * TeX, METAFONT, MetaPost: During an "ini" run, the name of the format to be dumped can be set with the --fmt/--efmt/--base/--mem options. * web2c: Extensive support for building e-TeX, Omega, a PDFTeX. * web2c: The manual pages are back. $ finger ctan@ftp.dante.de [sun.dante.de] Login name: ctan Directory: /home/server/ctan Shell: /bin/sync Never logged in. You can get it by anonymous ftp from ftp://tug.org/tex/modes.mf and shortly from any CTAN site in /tex-archive/fonts/modes/modes-3.4.mf. finger ctan@ctan.org for a list of all the CTAN sites and mirrors. News: New modes for the Phaser 560, Lexmark Optra S 1250/1650/2450, LaserJet 4000 FastRes, and one pixel/pt output. Various formatting glitches fixed. I don't understand mf.web well enough to understand how to make the modes use less memory; if some Metafont hacker can tell me, I'd like to hear it. If you have mode_def's which are not listed below, or corrections to the existing ones, please send them to me. Improvements to the exposition, particularly in how to create a new mode_def, are also welcome. kb@tug.org mode_def agfafzz = % AGFA 400PS (406dpi) mode_def agfatfzz = % AGFA P3400PS (400dpi) mode_def Rokicki" Message-Id: <199810290748.XAA29615@Xenon.Stanford.EDU> To: tex-archive@csc-sun.math.utah.edu Preannouncement of dvips 5.80 There have been reported, and I've found, some significant bugs in dvips5.76. One was fixed in 5.78. I am almost ready to ship a version of dvips5.80; this is a preannouncement `get-ready' notification. If you no longer care about this let me know and I'll take you off this `list'. This is *not* the great unification; I worked on that for months but gave up in despair; the code changes were too great for me to have enough confidence that I wasn't breaking things subtly. Instead, I plan to discontinue support of the `plain' version of dvips at some date in the future, and only work on the full dvipsk version. If this is a bad idea, somewhat let me know. Some changes so far: Improved tex.lpro to fix a bug that showed up in distiller. Improved tex.lpro to work around a problem in certain Windows environments. Made dvips complain if it had to section a document. Eliminated use-after-free bug in hps.c. Fixed a problem in t1part for the Euro fonts with partial font downloading. Fixed a big problem in t1part for some font downloading due to uninitialized allocations. Added `unknown' paper size back to config.ps. In addition, I've got another subtlety that I'm tracking down; once that is done, I'll probably ship what I have. The changes are not hugely extensive, and I'm sure others are needed, but I think I've got the important ones. No new features at this point in time. I'm very sorry I've been so quiet for so long. -tom 31-Oct-1998 21:19:23-GMT,1044;000000000000 Return-Path: Received: from Xenon.Stanford.EDU (Xenon.Stanford.EDU [171.64.66.201]) by csc-sun.math.utah.edu (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id OAA12435 for ; Sat, 31 Oct 1998 14:19:23 -0700 (MST) Received: (from rokicki@localhost) by Xenon.Stanford.EDU (8.9.1/8.9.1) id NAA12951 for tex-archive@math.utah.edu; Sat, 31 Oct 1998 13:19:21 -0800 (PST) Date: Sat, 31 Oct 1998 13:19:21 -0800 (PST) From: "Tomas G. Thomas Esser reports success in several builds, so it's probably ready to look at. I do not plan any additional changes (including making hps use distinct filenames in case there are two dvips's running in the same directory at the same time) at the moment, unless someone finds a bug that needs to be fixed. So use 5.82 and not 5.82 for alpha testing. I also found and fixed a couple other things, nothing major. Also, psfonts.map does support comments; any line starting with *, #, %, or ; is considered a comment. This is overkill; we should probably document one of these. Berkeley Math. Department. ANNOUNCING xdvi version 22 This is to announce that version 22 of xdvi, a previewer for .dvi files under the X Window System, has been released. It is available via anonymous ftp from the X Consortium ftp site, ftp://ftp.x.org/contrib/applications/xdvi-22.tar.gz from CTAN sites ftp://ctan.tug.org/tex-archive/dviware/xdvi/xdvi-22.tar.gz ftp://ftp.tex.ac.uk/tex-archive/dviware/xdvi/xdvi-22.tar.gz ftp://ftp.dante.de/tex-archive/dviware/xdvi/xdvi-22.tar.gz and from a mirror site for any of the above. Version 22 of xdvi makes the following changes from version 21: o Support for Motif. o Support for displays with more than one visual, and a -noinstall command line option to disable it. o Support for installing a private colormap (-install command line option). o Configuration via a script generated by a modified GNU autoconf. o An option to select the "x11alpha" driver when using Ghostscript to display PostScript specials. o Dimension arguments may now be given in terms of any of the TeX units (pt, pc, in, bp, cm, mm, dd, cc, or sp). o XDVISIZES values may now be of the form m0, m0.5, etc., signifying magsteps. o Handle rotated bounding boxes correctly when not showing PostScript. o Allow the shrink factor to be automatically selected on the command line. o Change -hushspecials to -warnspecials, and suppress warnings about undefined specials by default. A more detailed list of the changes is available at the xdvi web page, http://math.berkeley.edu/~vojta/xdvi.html There is also a version of xdvi, called xdvik, that incorporates Karl Berry's kpathsea library for path searching. In addition, xdvik supports hypertex support and support for Omega. Version numbers of xdvik track those of xdvi, and version 22 of xdvik is now also available. It is available from CTAN and mirrors (but not ftp.x.org and mirrors) in /tex-archive/dviware/xdvik. Web documentation for these programs, and pointers to their distribution files, can be found by following links from http://www.math.utah.edu/~beebe/software/bibtex-bibliography-tools.html#bibparse Other possibly relevant software can be found via pointers from http://www.math.utah.edu/~beebe/software/ The bibparse distribution is available in several formats directly at ftp://ftp.math.utah.edu/pub/tex/bib/bibparse-1.04.jar ftp://ftp.math.utah.edu/pub/tex/bib/bibparse-1.04.shr ftp://ftp.math.utah.edu/pub/tex/bib/bibparse-1.04.tar.gz ftp://ftp.math.utah.edu/pub/tex/bib/bibparse-1.04.zip ftp://ftp.math.utah.edu/pub/tex/bib/bibparse-1.04.zoo Only one of these is needed at a given site; their contents are identical, and at least one of them should be usable on all major UNIX, Atari, Amiga, Microsoft Windows, IBM OS/2, and Compaq/DEC (Open)VMS platforms. I leave it up to someone else to deal with the Apple Macintosh. I have just made the upload, so none of the mirrors will have teTeX-1.0 now (but that will change in the following days). Only sources at the moment; no binaries and install procedure. That will be added at a later time (but soon). Thomas =========================================================================== teTeX 1.0 =========================================================================== This is the announce of teTeX-1.0, a TeX distribution for UNIX systems (support for win32 systems will be added, too). This release is now called 1.0, because all extensions of previous versions (e.g. make TeX use ls-R etc.) have become official part of the web2c and kpathsea distribution and no longer require special patches. Additionally, temporary hacks which required GNU utils (GNU make, gcc, flex) could be removed and replaced by portable solutions. Compared to previous versions, this release has many advantages for perparing documents for the web, due to improved/added programs. pdf files with hyperlinks and thumbnails can be created either by using dvips and ps2pdf/distiller or more directly by using pdftex. Postscript with resolution-independant fonts can be generated due to the included postscript type 1 fonts. At the moment, only the sources are available. At a later time, I will add: - an install program which allows to select sub-packages - binaries for various UNIX platforms If you prefer the simple script driven installation, just wait until this is released. =========================================================================== News in release 1.0: =========================================================================== - updated programs: web2c 7.3.1, xdvik 22.05-k, dvips(k) 5.86, dviljk 2.6p2, texinfo 3.12. xdvik and dvipsk are now hypertex aware. The new kpathsea library allows to have a ls-R file in each texmf tree. TeX and friends now support true 8bit reading/writing by means of the TCX extension. Some arrays which had a fixed size in TeX+friends now increase dynamically, others can read their size from a config file (which means that they can be enlarged without recompilation). - added programs: pdftex 0.13d, e-TeX 2.1, Omega 1.8 - ConTeXt added - Postscript type 1 font versions: Computer Modern, AMS fonts, 35 base laserwriter fonts, Polish and Cyrillic variants of CM and others - much improved index file for the documentation tree (newhelpindex.html) - metrics for Y&Y's commercial mathtime and lucida bright fonts are included, which greatly simplifies using these fonts =========================================================================== Main features of teTeX: =========================================================================== - Main program packages: web2c, pdfTeX, e-TeX, Omega, xdvi, dvips, dvilj, ps2pk, makeinfo, texinfo, texconfig - TDS (TeX Directory Structure) compliant large support tree with fonts / macros - run-time configuration files for dvi-drivers and tex+friends - very easy to install and customize (install.sh and texconfig utility) - documentation for all packages included - automatic font generation with support for read-only inputs tree (i.e. possibility to use alternate destination for newly created fonts) - ready for a multi-platform setup - fast file searching - ready for producing resolution independent (bitmap free) postscript or pdf documents - the whole distribution can be installed anywhere in the filesystem (e.g. /usr/TeX or /usr/local/tex). You do not need to set any environment variable as long as you keep the original structure of the package. - mailing lists for discussion: tetex@informatik.uni-hannover.de for announcements: tetex-announce@informatik.uni-hannover.de =========================================================================== Getting teTeX-1.0: =========================================================================== The primary site is in Germany: ftp://sunsite.informatik.rwth-aachen.de:/pub/comp/tex/teTeX/1.0 Mirror sites: ftp://dante.ctan.org/tex-archive/systems/unix/teTeX/1.0/distrib ftp://cam.ctan.org/tex-archive/systems/unix/teTeX/1.0/distrib ftp://tug.ctan.org/tex-archive/systems/unix/teTeX/1.0/distrib ftp://lh116.uwinnipeg.ca/pub/teTeX/1.0/distrib ftp://ftp.duke.edu/tex-archive/systems/unix/teTeX/1.0/distrib ftp://sunsite.auc.dk/pub/tex/ctan/systems/unix/teTeX/1.0/distrib =========================================================================== The files: =========================================================================== sources of the programs (required): ==> sources/teTeX-src-1.0.tar.gz support tree with fonts / macros (required): ==> sources/teTeX-texmf-1.0.tar.gz sources for parts of the texmf tarball (optional): ==> sources/teTeX-texmfsrc-1.0.tar.gz The installation instructions are included in the teTeX-src-1.0.tar.gz archive as files INSTALL (complete instructions) and QuickInstall (short version). =========================================================================== Documentation: =========================================================================== The teTeX-texmf-1.0.tar.gz archive contains a large directory tree which contains a lot of documentation about teTeX and the packages it includes. The following patch will hopefully fix it. Other than the first three patches for teTeX-1.0, this one really affects the binaries. The new version number for xdvik will be 22.05c. The teTeX-0.4 release will be removed (slowly, because of mirroring) as well as the unix-install stuff from the teTeX-beta area. Changes in patch #6 are: - mfw is build with support for the X Windows System by default - bugfix to improve kpathsea debugging (spaces go to log file instead of terminal) - don't permit disk searches in TEXMFMAIN by default (texmf.cnf change) - fix order of -I flags for the C compiler to prevent problems with conflicting files installed in system directories - changes to texconfig to make it more robust - xdvik now uses on_exit if atexit is not available (e.g. SunOS) The binaries (except for the Linux ones) are all build with 1.0.5 sources. If you do not need X support for Metafont, that does not matter much. I have decided not to ask people for new (1.0.6) binaries but to release the 1.0.5 binaries instead (the changes are all minor things). Everything will be mirrored to the usual places in the next hours...
