I did not install the December 1997 release. The directory /usr/local/lib/tex/latex2e is a symbolic link to /usr/local/share/lib/tex/latex2e where the new version resides; the previous will remain available for a few months in /usr/local/share/lib/tex/latex2e.old In the INSCC building, the changes will not be visible until Wednesday 5-Aug-1998, following the nightly rdist run. Although the upgrade should be transparent, in that all files previously available in the LaTeX2e search path remain available, the changes are substantial: June 1997: 617 unpacked files 211716 lines 327 .dtx files June 1998: 844 unpacked files 255671 lines 455 .dtx files The number of packages (.dtx files) has grown by 39%. Despite the huge warning, everything does work still, but I would like to be able to update it if it's not that big of a problem. But since I don't know latex very well at all, I'm not sure quite what to fix (I tried changing the "\documentstyle" to "\documentclass" but then got the error ! It is now more than four years since LaTeX 2e was released and documented in two books in 1994, and another in 1995, and a fourth in 1997, so the warning is timely. If you are not using private modifications of old LaTeX 2.09 style files, grovelling around inside internal macros, then you should seriously consider converting your document to native LaTeX 2e. In the simplest case, this is a one-line change: \documentstyle{...} becomes \documentclass{...} If you used packages, then \documenstyle[package1,package2,...,packagen]{...} becomes \documentclass{...} \usepackage{package1} ... \usepackage{packagen} Although it is not necessary to change font commands from the old {\bf ...} style to \textbf{...}, you may wish to do so: LaTeX-mode in GNU emacs makes this easy: just run the command M-x convert-LaTeX-2.09-to-LaTeX-2e There is no reverse command, nor will I write one, so once you make this change, you can no longer run in an old 2.09 environment. LaTeX-mode will automatically choose 2e-style instead of 2.09-style if it finds a \documentclass command instead of a \documentstyle command. However, for included files that lack these, you have to tell Emacs to use 2e-style. You can do this either by manually running the command M-x LaTeX-2e-mode in the LaTeX buffer, or you can set it globally in your .emacs file for all LaTeX editing by putting (setq LaTeX-2e t) in your latex-mode-hook in your ~/.emacs file. In the simplest case, this looks like (setq LaTeX-mode-hook '(lambda () (setq LaTeX-2e t))) [A mode hook is a function, usually an anonymous lambda-function, that is executed at the end of an editing mode setup.] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Nelson H. The LaTeX-2e directory, $TEX/latex2e/unpacked, has a number of *.tex files that discuss some of this. Yesterday, I went through them, and selected certain important ones for typesetting and conversion to PostScript and PDF. Since the longest document is 564 pages long (including an extensive index), printing is NOT advised. Instead, launch acroread to view the files with Adobe Acrobat Reader. That is superior to running xdvi on the .dvi file, since you can use search commands, do selective printing, and change files without restarting the viewer program. Do NOT use acroexch (Adobe Acrobat Exchange) on these files: it is one minor version older than acroread, and gets segment violations, or infinite loops, on PDF documents that use Computer Modern fonts. Unfortunately, I cannot fix this until Adobe releases new versions, and they only do that at very long intervals (acroexch 3.00 is dated 6-Nov-1996, while acroread 3.01 is dated 13-Jun-1997). Here is a list of the PDF files; there are .dvi, .ps, and .tex files for each of them: % (cd $TEX/latex2e/unpacked; ls -lg *.pdf) -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 436891 Aug 5 12:50 clsguide.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 443344 Aug 5 12:50 fntguide.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 139499 Aug 5 12:50 ltnews01.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 124565 Aug 5 12:50 ltnews02.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 124355 Aug 5 12:50 ltnews03.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 123758 Aug 5 12:50 ltnews04.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 151195 Aug 5 12:50 ltnews05.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 122836 Aug 5 12:51 ltnews06.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 120372 Aug 5 12:51 ltnews07.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 142590 Aug 5 12:51 ltnews08.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 11670 Aug 5 12:51 ltnews09.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 196922 Aug 5 12:51 ltx3info.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 208033 Aug 5 16:16 modguide.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 2551855 Aug 5 12:55 source2e.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 36102 Aug 5 12:55 subeqnarray.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 37525 Aug 5 12:55 testpage.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 446562 Aug 5 12:56 usrguide.pdf The ltnews*.pdf files are short, usually 1 or 2 pages, and accompany each semiannual release of LaTeX 2e. doc/html/icons doc/html/ltx3info doc/html/modguide doc/html/usrguide packages/babel/contrib packages/babel/contrib/spanishb packages/expl3 packages/l3in2e In each package, there are two important files: the one with extension .ins contains bundles of files that the package user needs, and the one with extension .dtx contains package documentation. Sometimes, the documentation in the .dtx file itself needs the package files from the .ins file. Thus, to examine this documentation, you need to create a temporary empty directory, copy the package directory into it, and then run latex2e on the .ins file, then on the .dtx file (twice, to get cross-references resolved): cd /tmp cp -r $TEX/latex2e/contrib/supported/units . cd units latex2e units.ins latex2e units.dtx latex2e units.dtx The `-r' switch on cp means `recursive': copy all subdirectories too. Unfortunately, these steps cannot be automated so that they can be done once and for all in the $TEX tree: LaTeX2e will frequently ask questions of the user. I find this practice deplorable, and am preparing a letter to the LaTeX2e team on that issue. Although using TeX to unpack archive bundles in .ins files is somewhat slow, it has the HUGE advantage that it works on ALL platforms that TeX runs on. Any other bundling mechanism would require additional software, and porting and maintaining that software on all TeX platforms would be a major headache. Also, LaTeX 2e package directories contain only text files, making it much more likely that they can be transferred between machines without problems; most other archive formats are binary, and required special care to move between systems. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Nelson H. There IS however, a LaTeX 2e uuthesis class available: just look in $TEX/uuthesis/latex2e/. Several people have used this already, but I'd like a few more successes before we put it in the $TEX/latex2e/unpacked tree. For now, just alter your TEXINPUTS path, or make private copies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Nelson H. F. As with all Internet mailing lists, you can unsubscribe at any time by sending an e-mail message to tex-users-request@math.utah.edu with the subject or body "unsubscribe". You can resubscribe at any time by a similar message with the text "subscribe". All of our local mailing lists are maintained by humans, not computer programs, so do not expect instantaneous response; it will usually take a few hours, or a day or two, for a request to be responded to. Because of the installation this week of a major new LaTeX 2e release, before the creation of this new list, I'm going to repost to this list four messages that I previously sent to a selected group of people. Those of you who have already seen them can just delete them; others may find them helpful and informative. Although the purpose of this list is primarily to provide a forum for announcements of new TeX-related software and publications, users may post TeX questions to the list as well. Please remember, however, that 250+ people will see your questions: some may choose to respond helpfully, while others may be annoyed by your wasting their time: thus, please be succinct, and circumspect in such postings. Postings on this list will be archived for anyone to retrieve later, so even if you unsubscribe for a time, you can always find out what has been going on by looking in the archive, which is available on the World-Wide Web at http://www.math.utah.edu/pub/tex/mail/tex-users.txt or equivalently, ftp://ftp.math.utah.edu/pub/tex/mail/tex-users.txt ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Nelson H. It should look something like: \epsilon = \mu X_k j where the j sits directly below the epsilon, but the epsilon stays aligned with the rest of the equation. \epsilon_j moves the j to the right of where I want it, \atop shifts both characters upwards so that neither is aligned, \stackrel moves the epsilon up so that the j is aligned with the = and also shrinks the font (which I can compensate for). But I keep thinking there has to be a simple way to do this. If it were not \epsilon by \sum or \int, it would be easy using the \limits modifier, but that seems to throw an error when I use it with a regular symbol like \epsilon. Any suggestions? Although the upgrade should be transparent, in that all files previously available in the LaTeX2e search path remain available, the changes are substantial: June 1997: 617 unpacked files 211716 lines 327 .dtx files June 1998: 844 unpacked files 255671 lines 455 .dtx files The number of packages (.dtx files) has grown by 39%. Here is a list of the PDF files; there are .dvi, .ps, and .tex files for each of them: % (cd $TEX/latex2e/unpacked; ls -lg *.pdf) -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 436891 Aug 5 12:50 clsguide.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 443344 Aug 5 12:50 fntguide.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 139499 Aug 5 12:50 ltnews01.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 124565 Aug 5 12:50 ltnews02.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 124355 Aug 5 12:50 ltnews03.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 123758 Aug 5 12:50 ltnews04.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 151195 Aug 5 12:50 ltnews05.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 122836 Aug 5 12:51 ltnews06.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 120372 Aug 5 12:51 ltnews07.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 142590 Aug 5 12:51 ltnews08.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 11670 Aug 5 12:51 ltnews09.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 196922 Aug 5 12:51 ltx3info.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 208033 Aug 5 16:16 modguide.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 2551855 Aug 5 12:55 source2e.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 36102 Aug 5 12:55 subeqnarray.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 37525 Aug 5 12:55 testpage.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 staff 446562 Aug 5 12:56 usrguide.pdf The ltnews*.pdf files are short, usually 1 or 2 pages, and accompany each semiannual release of LaTeX 2e. files: the one with extension .ins contains bundles of files that the package user needs, and the one with extension .dtx contains package documentation. If only a portion of the original image is desired, then manual adjustment of the four values is essential. A common tool that we have used locally has been my epsutil package, which, with the GRID=1 option, can be used to get an on-screen display with a numbered grid from which corner coordinates can be read off. There are also options for translation, scaling, rotation, and other assorted operations. Even with this tool, it may take a few passes to get things precisely right. Yesterday, I wrote to the author of ghostscript, asking whether it would be possible to have gs track the minimal and maximal extents into the page bitmap, thereby automatically determining the bounding box coordinates. He kindly responded that this has already been done. I'd not discovered it, even though I'm a ghostscript beta tester, because it is not yet mentioned in the manual pages, or in Norman Walsh's excellent book ``Making TeX Work''. I've gone back over older versions of ghostscript, and determined that this feature is relatively new: it shows up first in gs-5.24, released 17-Jun-1998. Thus, the feature is currently available only at ghostscript beta test sites, such as ours; the last public release of Aladdin ghostscript was 5.10 [23-Nov-1997]. Here is how it is used: % gs -sDEVICE=bbox -dNOPAUSE hi.ps quit.ps Aladdin Ghostscript 5.34 (1998-8-16) Copyright (C) 1998 Aladdin Enterprises, Menlo Park, CA. All rights reserved. This software comes with NO WARRANTY: see the file PUBLIC for details. Loading NimbusMonL-Regu font from /usr/local/share/ghostscript/fonts/n022003l.pfb... 2128684 727397 1329180 40429 1 done. [gdevbbox] lower left = 72.305998 707.993978 [gdevbbox] upper right = 83.069997 714.239978 The quit.ps file ensures that gs terminates, rather than sitting in interactive mode waiting for user typein. The bounding box can now be computed as %%BoundingBox: floor(72.305998) floor(707.993978) ceil(83.069997) ceil(714.239978) which translates to %%BoundingBox: 72 707 84 715 since the four values are required to be integer constants. This task is clearly suited for automation, and you might therefore like to try out the script ~beebe/bin/autobbox.sh: it takes a list of PostScript files on the command line, and produces a new set with the same names, but with the gs-determined bounding boxes. The original files are preserved with suffixes ".original". autobbox.sh does one additional thing: it converts the original PostScript to PDF using Adobe Acrobat Distiller, and then runs Adobe Acrobat Exchange to convert it back to Level 2 PostScript. I intentionally chose Level 2, rather than 1, because this makes bitmap compression available, which is important for scanned images. However, Level 2 files will not print on some of our older printers. On a test set of 40 scanner-generated PostScript files last night, this processing reduced the file sizes by a factor of 20. I'm not going to install autobbox.sh as a system-wide utility, because it is an early prototype, and is subject to change. Also, there are PostScript files, such as those produced by my own lptops, dvialw, x79ps, and PLOT79, for which the conversion PostScript -> PDF -> PostScript actually makes the file sizes grow substantially: the original PostScript output by my software was already very carefully designed for maximal compactness. I found one serendipitous side effect of the PostScript -> PDF -> PostScript conversion for the scanned image files: the originals from the scanner were all missing showpage commands, preventing them from being printed individually. The output files from Acrobat Exchange now all have showpage commands. Is this new script a panacea for EPS file twiddling? No, for at least these reasons: (1) Rotation still needs to be dealt with by epsutil, or more tediously, manually in Canvas or Adobe Illustrator on a Macintosh, with file transfer from Unix to Mac, and back. (2) Fluff and dirt spots on the scanner glass, or the original, can result in bits being set outside the real image area, and gs will then generate a larger bounding box than is really appropriate; once again, epsutil comes to the rescue. (3) If only a subportion of the original image is wanted, then additional cropping with epsutil, or else with the autocrop Acrobat Exchange plugin that I installed a few days ago (but have not found at all easy to use), is called for. As a test last night, I converted 40 scanned images that Eleen has been working on for Hans Othmer. On one of the UltraSPARC 170 systems, autobbox.sh took about 5 minutes to run on the complete set (20 MB of data), and when I printed them with a simple TeX test file, boxing each image, I found that about 80% are immediately usable, and the remainder need additional cropping, or rotation. Still, the net result is the saving of many hours of tedious, error-prone, work. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Nelson H. F.
