A few weeks ago, to resolve some problems with the use of PostScript Type 1 representations of Computer Modern fonts in the NSF FastLane process, which uses Adobe Acrobat PDF files for grant proposals, I modified dvialw-type1 and dvips-type1 in /usr/local/bin to use the BlueSky fonts, rather than the BaKoMa fonts. The latter seemed to, at times, generated incorrect characters in the PostScript produced from the PDF files, even though the PDF files appeared to be correct on the screen. This worked for ghostscript and ghostview, but it turns out that those programs masked a further problem which Peter Brinkmann turned up when he tried to print a PostScript file from Mladen Bestvina's home page (book1.ps). Unknown to me before today, the BlueSky fonts are NOT interchangable with the BaKoMa fonts, because they use UPPERCASE fontnames, instead of lowercase ones. Thus, in the BaKoMa cmr10.pfa file, we have ... /FontName /cmr10 def ... while in the BlueSky cmr10.pfa file, we have ... /FontName /CMR10 def ... TeX never knows about this, because it calls that font "cmr10", and it is only at the DVI driver level where that name has to be mapped to a PostScript font name, that the matter comes up. I've therefore modified the /usr/local/share/lib/tex/fonts/postscript/type1/psfonts.map file that dvialw-type1 and dvips-type1 use, changing the old BaKoMa style lines ... cmr10 cmr10 Received: from biosrv.biology.utah.edu (biosrv.biology.utah.edu [128.110.194.74]) by csc-sun.math.utah.edu (8.8.5/8.8.5) with SMTP id JAA08261 for ; Fri, 15 Jan 1999 09:54:48 -0700 (MST) Received: by biosrv.biology.utah.edu; id AA20119; Fri, 15 Jan 1999 09:51:10 -0700 Date: Fri, 15 Jan 1999 09:51:10 -0700 (MST) From: Stephen Proulx Reply-To: Stephen Proulx To: tex-users@csc-sun.math.utah.edu Subject: using {filecontents} Message-Id: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Has anyone ever successfully used the filecontents environment to package a group of included files for emailing? "man prescript" gives sufficient information to run the program. If you wish to read more about how it works, you can look at the paper announcing it: @String{j-SPE = "Soft\-ware\emdash Prac\-tice and Experience"} @Article{Nevill-Manning:1998:ETP, author = "Craig G. Nevill-Manning and Todd Reed and Ian H. Witten", title = "Extracting Text from {PostScript}", journal = j-SPE, volume = "28", number = "5", pages = "481--491", month = may, year = "1998", CODEN = "SPEXBL", ISSN = "0038-0644", bibdate = "Thu Jul 29 15:11:46 MDT 1999", bibsource = "http://www3.interscience.wiley.comjournalfinder.html", URL = "http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/cgi-bin/fulltext?ID=1792&PLACEBO=IE.pdf; http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/cgi-bin/abstract?ID=1792", acknowledgement = ack-nhfb, } For your convenience, I've saved the article PDF and PostScript files in -rw-rw-r-- 1 beebe 2048000 Aug 2 10:20 /u/sy/beebe/spe-v28-n5.pdf -rw-rw-r-- 1 beebe 3940165 Aug 2 10:21 /u/sy/beebe/spe-v28-n5.ps where they'll remain for a week or so. Those of you who wish to install it on home UNIX systems can find it in /usr/local/src/prescript/prescript-2.1/; that directory contains three additional files that are not yet in the developers' distribution: Makefile, prescript.sh, and prescript.man. Installation should just require "make install", assuming you already have python installed on your system. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Nelson H. There is a landscape style file called lscape.sty that we have used with pretty good success. Not sure if it is on the Math computers, but we have it here if anyone wants me to make it available. Below is a test file we used to play with it. Don't expect your documents to be portable. Also, note that it is distinctly unpleasant for the reader to have to turn a printed page sideways to read such a table, and virtually impossible when the page is on a screen! A better choice is to split the table, or else choose a slightly smaller font. I would like either the > reference, or the equation number to change. Doesn't this depend on the style you are using? For example, try article instead of report and see if that changes the bahavior. Also check which style files you have linked and see if any of them redefines the section or equation commands. LaTeX has a notion of current counter, and that is what is output in response to the \label command; outside the equation, the current counter is the sectional one. Similar problems arise if you put a \label before a \caption in a figure or table; it is the \caption macro, not the \end{figure} or \end{table} macro that steps the figure/table counter. If the \label precedes the \caption, it will record the number of the previous figure/table. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Nelson H. F.
